Ford Madox Brown

... was born in Calais of English parents, in 1821. His best known works are probably The Last of England (1855 – depicting an emigrant couple) and Work (1852–65). Influenced by the Pre–Raphaelites (although never a member of the Brotherhood), he spent the last 14 years of his life (1879–93) painting a series of twelve murals for Manchester Town Hall, depicting the history of the city.
